I had a chicken go missing and figured she was sitting on eggs in my stack of hay. I counted 21 days from hiding and that was the 8th, thinking I would see something by the weekend. That worked, sure enough she came out last Friday with 3 peeps. Then Sat morning there she was waiting at the hen house for breakfast. Went a head and moved her into a dog kennel as nursery to keep the little ones with access to food and water and so far so good. There is one Cochin in the hen house that is also setting but I gave her brabanter eggs to try and hatch. This weekend will be 21 days and I pad that with give or take days. I wont worry until next wed or so.

Chicken Girl

Today is day 18 for my broody. It was -2 this am, but 28 in the barn. My birds have been handling the cold very well, but I'm concerned about the chicks.
#1. Frozen water
#2. Too cold to come out from under Mama to eat.

I had the water set up on a cookie tin heater on a cement block. It worked well, but is too high for the chicks to get to. DH didn't want the cookie tin in the wood chips. Well, I hung a heat lamp in the brooder. Hopefully, that will keep the water thawed and the chicks will be under there when they eat and drink. I can't imagine, as cold as it is, that it will be 95* under there, but at least they won't be chilled. Am I making too much of this? Do they need the heat lamp? I wasn't going to use one, but I started thinking...

DH says that's always trouble or work for him.

Also, do I need to put down paper towels? I did that when I had hatchery chicks. Do I need paper towels with a broody?
