Broody in Feb!!!??

I'm going to keep these, I think. I'm really interested to see what color eggs they lay. If they're roos, then we'll eat them. I'm hoping they're all pullets!

Now that I have one under my belt, I'm wait for my next broody so I can bid on some eggs at auction. Let's see... I want polish, SLW, BBS Orpingtons, lav orps, more barred rocks... The list can be endless...

CONGRATS ON YOUR NEW LITTLE ONES.

I still have 14 days. My broody did some loud bawking today and took a big smelly poo, all over her nest. drats. I opened up the crate, she came flying out , straight into the dust bathing box that I have inside the coop. SHe had a big ol' dust bath. Then after about 10 minutes tried to nest in a nest box. Had to scoot her out of there. She ate a bit, walked around some, ate some more, bawked some more. Back to her nest box, scooted her out again. I'm thinking darn chicken. Finally after a bit of a pursuit. I grabbed her, back to her real eggs. She nestled down right away. whew. I thought I had blown it for her. But, she's committed. I just wish she hadn't have had that messy stinky poo so close to her eggs, she did manage to get one of them, ewwww.

I can't wait, I hope they all hatch. I can't wait to see the colors. yay.

My broody had about 3 poos in her nest. Somehow, she missed the eggs.

Who's next in the "hatch" line? Chicken Girl, you are next weekend aren't you?

Hi all! I posted way earlier about having 3 broody banties sitting on nothing. I found a stash of banty eggs hiding in the back yard on Friday. 10 total. Have no idea how old they are or if they are any good, but I divided them up between the girls! We'll see what happens. If I put them under the girls on Feb 19th, would that make that day 1?

After my girl broke that egg, I gave her a bath. She was BAD! Poop all on her backside and on her wing. She was happy that I gave her one. So after all the eggs hatch and it's been a day or two, maybe you should keep the babies in the house and give mama a bath and then the hairdryer. Then back to babies. Just an idea.

And.....my friend put my eggs in her bator last night at 10:30pm. So 21 days for those....again

....and 18 on the mama in the garage. And more eggs coming in the mail in a couple days (to be mailed Monday) and my new bator should be here Tuesday.

Don't give up. Try, try again, right?

Just finished my "eggtopsy". The 2 eggs that didn't hatch were filled with yellow goo. No signs of blood or beginning development. I'm not sure if they just weren't fertilized or if they quit right off the bat. Good idea to do it in a ziplock bag. We didn't smell a thing. Broody didn't like me taking the eggs, but as soon as I did, she was up stretching and eating. She moved to a new spot and the chickies all followed and climbed in.

ETA: Fordmommy, I do believe this hatching stuff is addicting. I'm already looking for my next broody so I can order eggs!

I don't really have room yet as I just set up the big brooder for my broody turkey.
