Broody in Feb!!!??

Im trying to debate whether I should candle the eggs under my broody. I would wait until she is off the nest first, out for her daily excercise

What do you all think? Im so anxious to see if any are developing.

Actually I lift her up everyday to make sure she didnt steal any eggs. She's not happy about it

I just thought it would be nice to check all the eggs without forgetting which ones I checked.

Mark them with a pencil. Maybe the date or something.

I know I'm a little late for this post. However, one of my Silkie girls just went broody two days ago. I thought she was in the nest box to lay an egg, and when I went out the next morning to collect eggs again, she was still there. I removed 5 eggs from her. I candled them and they were all clear so OK to eat (esp. since they were only there about 12 hours). The next day I went out again and she had another 2 under her. I removed those too

. I wasn't sure I was ready for more chicks and she is kind of young. However, if she is still "sitting" when I go out today, I am going to leave her there on her eggs. I will move her in a day or two as I'm not sure how the roosters will react to chicks. These are my first chickens and I hatched them in an incubator last spring. Fingers crossed, will update later.

9 days to go....................tick tock.

I will be glad when she has hatched the babes and she can be moved to a larger living area , those poops they drop are horrendously smelly. I won't miss that part of the brooding process. My word. That is something !!!!!!
My broody is in a large dog kennel. So, it's really hard for me to get in their and give it a good overhaul.
I hope I don't miss it, I have to work the day they are due. Bummer.


question, what day do they usually start pipping in the egg, day before ???

I'm loving this thread!
My broody is on her second week, and I'm getting her moved hopefully tonight to a new nest... maybe I can candle the eggs while I move them... they are dark brown (Welsummers) so might not be able to see much... but I'll try.
I guess I can count the eggs too...
I've been leaving her alone, as I know she must do 'something' right...
we had some half developed ones we found last fall... and took thinking they were just fine to eat. ahem... yukkoooo...

so, this time I'm leaving them in.
It will also help to get her out so my ranch hand will collect the 'OTHER' eggs again... argh... I just found out he's not only leaving her alone with HER eggs, but not taking ANY of them out...
what would I do if 50 eggs hatched? dang, I have four young hens laying in there, and they are all fertile! LOL!

And Koolduck I also feed my girls grapes right there on the nest. At least I know that they are getting some liquids then. I brake them up in halves or thirds if they are to big. Sometimes they won't eat them until you leave. Silly girls. But watermelon or cantalope would work too. You get the picture.
