Broody in the winter! UPDATES!

So the eggs will be mixed.....daddy roo is a Polish bantam, and the hens are 2 Cochins, 1 Silkie, and 1 Polish......

It'll be awesome to see what the babies end up looking like......I wish I could tell the Silkie eggs from the Cochin eggs...I'm worried about the Cochin eggs hatching out Frazzles, because the Roo is frizzle, and so are the little Cochin hens....

Hi Friends!

Here's the scoop on the broody hen. Now there are TWO broodies! A silkie hen, and the little cochin. And they're sharing the nest and taking turns doing their potty/food/water breaks! They're like these little co-broodies and they're so darned cute!

I did bring them inside this weekend. I carried their little next (plastic bin) into the basement, and they never got off their eggs yet! I checked this morning and they were all snuggled on their eggs and I think they're a bit nervous about the move, but I'm betting today they'll eat drink and do their potty break. I have no idea how many eggs they're setting on, but at least the other hens won't add anymore eggs to the nest.

So how's it going for everybody else with your winter broodies?

Nice Sharon!

My broody is still going strong on day 10 today..I moved her as well. I had to take her out of her temp pen because the hens within the outer pen kept breaking through the fencing AND laying their eggs with her!!! Luckily I had her eggs marked..except 1 that was laid just prior to giving her eggs.so I just left it with the rest as they would all be from the same start date..7 eggs...Well I moved them Sat morning and low and behold she had 8 eggs under her! SO It looks like I will have to temporarily fire up the bator to hatch this stray late chick out..Unless she stays put for a few extra days..I have a bad feeling though that egg is about 6 days behind all others and she will not keep sitting that long to hatch Im sure..So Ill hatch it for her and give the chick back after its nice and dry!

I may have to use an incubator as well, with all the extra eggs that came in......

What kind of chicks are you hatching? (I may have asked before and forgotten.)

Sharon

Hi! I said I would post back with the progress of my broody. Well, momma hen and chicks are doing great. All three of the eggs hatched on day 20, despite some very cold weather.

Hope that all of your girls are doing well. Look forward to seeing pictures!
