I know. I can't lift her up and see how many there are without pulling back a bloody stump.

Any eggs that get pushed out far enough I will collect.

I know what you mean! To keep the battle scars to a minimum, I take a old towel or blanket out with me. Throw it over the hen and then lift her up. She's can peck and scratch all she wants, but it towel will protect you. As long as it is not holey!

I guess I should count myself lucky. I have only had 2 broodies, my first a sex-link and I currently have a broody cochin sitting on some eggs, and both of them have let me pick them up, collect unmarked eggs from underneath of them. They growl at me, but show no signs of aggression at all.

Holy Towell!

We had a leghorn go broody when I was a kid... They are so tiny we only let her keep six eggs and she hatched out 5 of them. She wasn't the best of mothers though.

Best broody we ever had was a Light Brahma. Hatched out more chicks than I've ever seen. 30+!!

OK, I checked her and there are 15 eggs, one is white. I think I will let her hatch it even though it will not be a pure bred.

Also, I put up a "fence" to keep the other hens from laying in there so she will have a better hatch. If the other hens keep laying in the nest, none might hatch.

Are you going to fix her up a separate place to set, with food and water?
