Broody now!

I had to order hatching eggs last year when Speckle went broody since I had 3 chickens and NO rooster and I just switched them out when she was off the nest and she didn't care at all. But, she is a really reliable broody and a good mom, so it would probably be better to put them under her after full dark when she's asleep if your's is a first time mom.

Be sure that once you get those fertile eggs in and unwrapped and counted that you go ahead and mark them with a line of crayon/ magic marker, etc to be sure they don't get removed from the nest by accident and the most important of all, as much as you want to put those eggs under her ASAP, you HAVE to put them to rest pointy side up in an egg carton for a minimum of 24 hours to let the air sac settle into place properly. If you don't, they won't hatch well or at all in some cases!

Get the eggs in, unwrap, count and be sure to check for cracks, micro and obvious ones.
Place the eggs pointy side up into egg cartons and let rest for a minimum of 24 hours to let the air sacs settle into place.
If you have a willing broody, place them under her or near her after the settling time. She'll add them to the "dud" eggs, which you can slip out of the clutch when she is off the nest eating, drinking, etc. She'll never know that the duds are gone if there are more or equal amounts of eggs.

I don't worry about ruffling the feathers too much with my girls, they do that the second they hear another hen coming up to try to lay, and everytime that I take the side of the tractor down to boot them off of the nest to eat and drink, you'd think I was killing them by intruding on thier personal space!!

If she's nervous, then set them under her after full dark. She'll be so tired she's not going to care and she certainly won't remember any of the egg switch and adding by morning.

Let me know how you're doing!

And yes, if she's that stubborn with the dud eggs, it does look like she's going to be a fantastic momma!!

Oh, I forgot to add that I booted them both off the nest at the same time and between both mom and daughter they are both sitting on a grand total of 28 eggs evenly divided between them!

It's too funny when the little banty hens come into lay and babysit the eggs, bless thier hearts, they try SO hard to sit on them all, but they just can't pancake far enough to cover 15+ eggs in a clutch, but boy, do they ever scream thier fool heads off if you DARE take them out so the broodies can come back and sit on thier eggs!!

We've already got our lockdown timeline set. On the 30th, we're taking Speckle and eggs that she started yesterday out with her and into the brooder since she's the most easygoing broody and I know how to handle her. Since they're both stealing eggs back and forth, I've got the originals marked with an X and then the ones from yesterday marked with a line in a different color marker. All of them have the line, only the original hatch has the X on them, so it shouldn't be too hard to find them when lockdown starts.

Marantha being a new mom is going to stay in the tractor for the hatching so that I can check on her more often and make sure that she is doing well and not harming babies or kicking them out too soon. She's being really stubborn about sitting on the eggs so I'm hoping this is going to be a great thing as far as her being as great of a mom as her mom is!!

I too have my first broody. but alas no fertile eggs. So I have chickes coming to put under her so she can raise them for me. They arrive on the 10. She is on eggs now and I have to remove some every couple of days since other hens lay in her box sometimes. But she is sitting tight and being good to get off nest once a day to eat and drink so i do not mess with her. Cant wait till chicks get here.

Waiting for those chicks to arrive is just as nervewracking as waiting for pipping and waiting on little fuzzybutts, welcome and keep us all updated!

Wel i never bought fertile chicken eggs because i have a rooster but when i have a broody i just putt the eggs i want under her at any time.. If shes really broody you can just about do anything with her.

My BO also went broody for the first time. I am new at this as well, so it should be a fun adventure. My husband, on the other hand, is so not in favor of more little chicks. Oh well, we tend to let nature take its course around here with the chickens. So, new life is thrilling to us all. Best wishes for a happy healthy hatch everyone!!!
