Broody or not?

My girls are 10 months old, and wondering when one might go broody. Does a broody hen sit on the nest all night or leave it and go up to perch with the rest of the flock? Breeds are WR, BR, RIR, EE. Thanks!

hi, sometimes a hen will do what you said, sit all day, wander off at night, when they are about to get serious, but a broody hen will sit in her box, all squashed dwon and cluck or even peck you a bit when you move her.

Out of those breeds EE is the only breed likely to go broody.

Any chicken can go broody. I have a very unlikely girl that is very broody. She stays on the nest longer than everyone else (after egg is already laid), and she's tried to hatch once. She is only 10 months old as well.

They will stay on the nest overnight, that is your best sign.

They will resemble a chicken pancake and shriek at you if you try to mess with them. And yes, the final signs are that she will quit laying and stay on the nest at night.
