Yeah, I always made a point with a broody hen to go out and bring her a little water and goodies every day. I'm not sure why you are using the heating pad though. It should be pretty warm where you are without it. Broody hens will usually get up once a day to poop and eat and as long as its warm outside, the eggs should be fine.

UPDATE!!!
Hi Chkn...I was using the heating pad because I had brought her into the AC'd house and plus she had lost quite a bit of weight and was very cool. The eggs she was laying on weren't even feeling as warm as they should have been. Over the next few days she made big improvements and I could tell she was feeling a lot better because her pecking my hand when I would give her her food began to hurt again. Anyway she has been in the house ever since last weekend and is going out in the morning for her daily dusting and bathroom time. I candled the eggs and they all appear to have swimming chicks, which is as exciting to see as your baby on ultrasound. I just want to squeal with joy. Can you tell this is my first batch to hatch? A really cool thing I did today was while my son was on skype I candled an egg for him and it was sooooo cool because he could see it like he was standing there with me. It was great. He just moved to Montana last week, so even though my nest is becoming more spacious my hens nest is filling.

Big Bertha's comb is back to the normal color and I have been feeding her fresh egg, yogurt, melon of the day and pasta. I think she like my organic cooking and doesn't like the grains so much any more. She seems very happy to be a broody girl, cuz man she is extremely dedicated to those eggs and protecting them.

The eggs are due to hatch a week from this Wednesday so we still have a little bit to go til hatch day.

I'll check back in in a few days. Thank you everyone for your thoughts and support and if there are any tips you want to throw my way please do.

:D good glad to hear that she's doing better. And thx for keeping us posted on how the eggs are doing :)

Were still hanging in here. Big Bertha, that's my broody hen is doing good and eating pretty good. She is not eating her regular diet of the scratch, mash, and milo. Just the food I have been making for her.

Is this normal for all broody hens to do this? Anyway, the one egg that was supposed to hatch on Tuesday this week died in the egg on about day 7 or so. That was the day she left the eggs unattended in the coop and they got cool, but the other 4 are doing great and moving in there shells. I candled them yesterday to make sure everything was going good and there expected hatch day is this coming Wednesday, the 18th.

This morning at about 1:30 the first egg hatched and I slept right through it. Then sadly she crushed an egg that had a viable chick in it (candled it last night).

Another chick stopped growing about a week ago for whatever reason.

And the last egg has started the zipping process.
