I have a broody GL orp on day 18 or so of her eggs - One chick pipped around day 17
This morning i found the same egg, half zipped with its leg sticking out. It wasn't moving, had blood on it, and had been kicked out of the nest :(
She's obviously decided to peck it, and i have two other eggs in the nest still to hatch.
Surely its not safe to leave them in there? I have an incubator so if need be, i can take them out and put them in there before she tries to kill them.

Any suggestions?
Thanks for all help! :D

Hi. I'm sorry about your chick! Day 17 is early so maybe there was something wrong with it. My recent broody ate her eggs when the temps here went to 105. It's too hot for the developing embryos to survive.

Whether you let her finish the hatch or move the eggs to your incubator is up to you. If you incubate then you need to decide whether to put the chicks under the broody afterward or break her if she doesn't give up.

PS I'm sorry I know I didn't tell you what you should do. The safest bet is take them and break the broody. If it was my decision I would leave the eggs with the hen. You should do what you think is the right thing for you and your flock.

Thanks for your reply!
i'll prob leave them in there with her for now (i'd like her to hatch her first clutch of chicks - and i have GL orp and GL orp x partridge brahma in there with her) and watch her like a hawk 🧐
if they start pipping and she pecks them, i'll take them out and put them in the incubator.

Thanks again! :)

My decision would be to put the eggs in my hatcher and break the broody. I have hatched with my broody's years ago but now all of the eggs go into the incubator. I recently added more nest boxes to a coop because I had some broody's taking over the nest boxes. I would take them out even if they don't like it but before I know it, they are back in the nest boxes. I keep taking them out and they keep getting back in. Eventually they will get the message. Good luck and have fun ...

Good luck! Please do post an update though. I got my fingers and toes crossed!
