Broody Serama hen

I got my original eggs from a breeder in North Carolina and another in California. Both members here. I also got some eggs from MyPetChicken that may have included some silkied. I hatched my own at the same time and they all got mixed up! Lol
I’m not a big fan of the frizzled seramas, but I love the silkied ones.
Here’s one of my new layers.

soooo lovely. She looks like half chicken half bunny rabbit, the fur and color and everything. I want!

Thanks! She has a slightly lighter color twin sister! One of my broodies hatched them very early spring. Momma turned them loose at about 4 weeks old, but it was still very cold here and they were so tiny, so I brought them inside for a few weeks. I fully intended to sell them, but of course fell in love with them. I’m so glad I kept them.

And they are very soft! Maybe a little more wiry than a rabbit, but still very soft. :D

Do you only keep seramas? I have bantam chickens 22 of them, and now 5 seramas, but I had to separate them, because serama rooster is older, and he was trying to kill all the bantam roosters.

Oh wow, beautiful pictures!! :love

Bantam roosters can sure be a handful! Lol
I have over 100 chickens, and they are mostly bantams (a small group of black copper Marans and a smaller group of cream legbars). But I have 3 pens of bantam cochins, a pen of OEGBs, and 2 pens of seramas. I also raise Call ducks! :D

Why are they handful? I have three cochin roosters, two nice ones and one not so much. My favorite is polish rooster, the one with purple head, I had to spray him so others wouldn't peck at him. He is such a sweetie! I think I got too many roosters, 50/50. I need to build a bachelor pad for them. They are 3 months now and get along just fine, but I am afraid it will not last forever... pic: monster rooster...

Monster rooster is beautiful! I have a few mottled also! Love them.

I think bantam roosters get the Napoleon complex. I’m little but have to prove that I’m big! Most of mine are very docile and easy going. I have a couple males that run my yard loose now, that are scared of their own shadows! :D
Instead of building a bachelor pen, I usually just let my excess rooster run around my yard. I have way too many young ones now that need to go, but I can’t even give them away. I’ve considered butchering, but just don’t have the heart to do it to them. I’ll let a few grow out and decide who becomes breeders, and move out the rest. I have at least 20 excess roosters right now, in 4 of my pens.

MY chicks are now a week old, they are growing nicely. My serama hen has rose comb and two of her chicks look like will have rose bombs too. (Not sure if she is 100% pure breed serama because of the comb) Does that mean I have two females and one male? Not sure how combs are passed genetically. I am posting few pics I took today, maybe you will be able to determine the sex of the chicks. To me they all look and develop the same. What do you think?

I don’t see any obvious males yet, but some are slow to develop. I can usually tell within about 3 weeks, but I’ve had ones that kept me guessing for much longer.

Rose comb could have some sebright or even d’anvers in her background, but you’d have to ask the genetics gurus about passing it forward. I’m pretty sure there isn’t any sex linkage to it, and I think rose is dominant, but if she has single combed offspring, then she only has one copy of the rose comb gene.

You are right, she does look a lot like sebright with her rose comb and white face and earlobes. I just discovered tiny little beetle like bugs around the coop, what is it? Can't find any info, they were hiding under the coop, when I moved it to clean they ran way into the ground. They jus look like beetles but small. Have you had any experience with such bugs?
