I am new here so please forgive me if this is common knowledge. I am looking for the smallest breed of checkin that gets broody and has decent egg production.

I got you covered. Pekin bantams (aka Cochin Bantams). They're as broody as Silkies, but are generally considered to be better layers. I have six of them. Come in lots of colors. Very cute, funny birds. They've also done well in the heat with some assistance (shade, cool water, and fans to keep the air moving). You can order them sexed from Meyer Hatchery or My Pet Chicken (calico, mottled, and frizzle mottled varieties).

Generally you're looking for a bantam, and you should expect 3 eggs per week.

Different breeds (bantam and full-sized) have different tolerances to temperature extremes that you need to take into account before selecting a breed. I'm in the hot desert and have D'Uccles who do well with heat (and are prone to broodiness).
