Broody -- Success in December!

Final count is 8 hatched (one large and strong fuzzy died with no known cause... so that leaves 7alive), Out of the 4 that didn't hatch - Two showed veining but that is it. One was a largish embryo and one was just starting to pip. I found Mama and 5 babies off the nest, so maybe this one got cold and died. Two of the surviving chicks I am brooding myself because they are small -- one is a White Silkie (but Dad is blue) and the other is at least half Mille Fleur leghorn. The woman I got the hen from had a mixed pen, so Dad could be something other than leghorn.
I have to work today, so will try for pictures tomorrow.

We ended up with a BA/RIR cross, a very pale ginger chick (I believe this to be a NHR/BO cross), a black sex-link pullet, 2 EE's and the 2 others mentioned above.
By the way, when talking about crosses -- do you put it hen/roo or roo/hen? I put the hen first...

Mrs. C has been sitting on her 12 shipped B/O eggs for 13 days now and we just candled yesterday. Only three out of the 12 looked like anything might be going on. Is that normal to have such a low ratio? I'm a little disappointed. Should I remove the ones that look like nothing is happening or should I just leave them there until around the actual hatch date - next Sunday?

I am hoping she gave this hen some pointers cause she decided to set some eggs herself.

Not sure exactly what day these are due but best I can remember it was about a week after "Stormy".

I am sorry about what seems to be a low ratio of good eggs. I know that shipped eggs can be iffy according to what I've read here. Then again last summer, a broody of mine hatched just 4 out of 12. If I remember correctly, most of those eggs had an embryo of varying ages in them.
I would think that the "bad" eggs would give off some warmth when Mrs. C got off the nest. If they start smelling though...

They are really cute. The LF chicks are almost as big as Mama! What breeds do you have?
I have a concern though...I wonder if the LF chicks will pick on the little bantam as they get bigger...

Hi, Mrs. C is crazy, she never gets off the nest. I have to take her off once a day! And she is getting hand fed scrambled eggs as she isn't eating much on her own, crazy lady! I can't wait until we get at least one chick, she needs to snap out of her broody behaviour for her own good! It'll be really cute to see her with a baby! Thanks for the advice! And congrats to all on your new chicks!

Finally a picture. Sorry just one right now. This is a mille fleur leghorn. Could be fullblood or half. I bought the hen from someone who had her in a mixed pen. The egg was laid only a few days after I got her. Ignore the date and sorry it is a bit fuzzy.
