Broody... that laid an egg?

Well... poor thing laid another egg to hatch today... I feel so bad that it’s not fertile otherwise I’d let her hatch it.

I really can’t get eggs for her to hatch... guess I’ll just work on breaking her.

I had Orps that were determined to go broody. Three years running, they'd lay sbout 8 eggs then go broody. Usually they did this in late May, early June when it was good and hot during the day, so I'd dunk them in a bucket of cool water to take some of the heat out of their breast muscles and lower regions, and under their wings and thighs. They seemed to like it! Then I'd put them in the broody breaker after that. It worked pretty well, usually after 3 days in the dog cage I could let them out and they weren't broody any more .... for a couple of weeks, lol! Like I said this went on for about three years. They made lovely soup.

My last broody laid 3 of her own eggs for her clutch. It would be better to say a broody hen stops laying after a certain point, prob by day 5, but with stopping & starting, that could change things. She needs to be in an elevated wire cage, with food & water, but no bedding. Some are harder to break than others; sometimes it's best to give them some fertilized eggs & let them have babies! :)

That is what we have done and SO EXCITED! 2 more weeks..
