Hello fellow chicken keepers!
Once again I'm asking for help with one of my hens...it's been a rough month or so for the flock and I. One of my hens went broody for the first time, and was so agitated I got her some hatching eggs since I don't have any roosters. She's been doing ok (as far as I can tell...I've never dealt with this either) until this morning when I checked on her. She's got these bloody and/or scabby spots on her comb, but doesn't seem to have any other symptoms that I could see. I checked her as thoroughly as I could without making her too mad, and don't see anything else. I'm thinking maybe this is fowl pox, but haven't seen any of the white nodules or yellowy pustules that most of the sites, books, and forum posts mention. Mosquitoes have been REALLY bad the last couple days (I got bit 6 times in the time it took to take these photos), and I killed several mosquitoes that were hanging around her. So my questions are:
1. Is this fowl pox?
2. If yes, should I take the eggs away from her or let her hatch them out?
3. If she hatches them, should I take the chicks away or should she be healed up by then? The chicks should be here in about 2 weeks (I gave them to her six days ago).
4. If it isn't fowl pox, what is causing her to bleed like this?
5. How do I treat this? I was planning to dot the bloody spots with some iodine on a q-tip, then cover with triple antibiotic (the kind without pain stuff in it) and give her some Nutri-Drench or VetRx (no clue which would be more appropriate at this point). My thought is to wait a little closer to dark so she has as much time to calm down from her check-up earlier this afternoon...don't want to stress her out too much.
Thank you for any help you can give me! I've already searched the forums and several vets' websites, plus the couple of chicken keeping books I have and I am at a loss...
