I know the rooster is needed to fertilize the eggs, But, will a hen go broody without a rooster?

If it has a tendency to go broody a hen can go broody without the rooster, and without the eggs, its just a hormonal thing. Broodys have been known to go broody and sit on golfballs or Air if nothing is available.

Yes, Hens will go broody without roosters. Hormones as Marlin says............
