my little barred rock petunia went broody. i could tell by the way she was actiong ruffing her feathers out in the yard she was just acting different i thought ok maybe broody. so last night she was on the nest still on it this morning. i think there maybe 2 eggs under her and of course they cant hatch poor baby. i only have two hens big enough to lay eggs. we have 3 nest boxes but they will only use one. what will poor rosey do when she wants to go lay her egg and petunia is still sitting? what do i need to do about this please?

Well, if the eggs aren't fertile, and you don't intend to give her any fertile eggs, just remove the 2 she has and check her every day for new eggs. The other hen will squeeze in and lay her egg, if at all possible. If not, she will use another nest. In any event, you must collect the eggs frequently........Pop

Hi, leave her for about a week and see if she starts laying, if not you may want to get some eggs otherwise they could sit there until they have their eggs, mine went broody and we left them for a week and they still are not laying, so we got some eggs off a lady today and it is sooo cute they are pushing the eggs underneath them so that is a good sign:) I hope it all goes well for you.

Since this thread is not too old:

Your hes will stay broody for the time it would take to hatch an egg. Other than making them uncomfortable, or giving them eggs to hatch or chicks, there is nothing you can do to stop them. Just leave the hen and she will sit on the nest as if she had eggs. After awhile, her body says "Well, no chicks. Get up." One day she will be broody, the next it will be back to normal. None of our hens were gradual about getting off the nest. I suggest taking them outside each day. They may try to stay broody on the ground for awhile, but eventualy they will get up and do other things. Probably a lot of dustbathing and everything they do will have a sort of frenzy to it. They may have a glass eye look to them. Good luck to anyone who sees this!
