Brown, green or white?

I have about 4 shades of brown to cream from 3 breeds and everyone comments about the colors. Come March I will be adding white, green and Wellsummer terra cotta to the mix. I can't wait to hear the comments then.
I wanted to try some white just for myself because I was told white shells are thinner - or is that because they are from factory chickens. Anyway my shells are very thick and hard so soft-boiled eggs which I love are difficult.

Pardon my ignorance, but what breed lays those beautiful red eggs? I currently have green/pink eggs from 3 Ameraucanas, white from 4 bantams and brown from 4 production hens. I may add a few of those red egg layers to the flock next spring.

French Marans. (And not Cuckoo Marans)

Your "Ameraucanas" are actually Easter Eggers (they're a sort of crossbreed that lays colorful eggs) though. The blue eggs in my avatar are from true Ameraucanas, but otherwise, Ameraucanas should not and do not lay green, pink, or brown eggs. Hatcheries and feedstores make this confusion with customers all the time. . . For one, hatcheries/feedstores don't sell real Ameraucanas.

Thanks for clearing that up about the Ameraucanas and the info on the Marans. I`m learning something everyday about all this. I bought the eggs to hatch out last Spring and was told they were Ameraucanas but I see now that is not the case.

Guess what! I just found local BCM breeder, 10 miles from my house, and I never even knew about it until just now.

In fact, it says on her website she is a byc member!. She is selling straight run chicks, $18 each for Bev Davis lines and $15 each for Wade Jean lines! I love the chicks, but that price tag is a hard thing to get over, especially since most of them could end up being roosters. I know that good lines will cost a lot, but since Marans aren't really supposed to be my focus right now, I am just not sure. I also found a breeder about an hour away with Olive Egger chicks for $4 each. Maybe I should ask her about her BCM's? I am just soooo tempted right now! Someone hold me back!

Whoa!!! That is an outlandish price for straight run chicks. . . And really, someone saying they're Bev Davis or Wade Jean lines is really old hat. Everyone posts that in their ads.

Even some of my BCM's came from "Bev Davis lines" or "Bev Davis x Wade Jean" and so on. . .

I go for $6-10 per chick on straight run, no more.

Yeah, it is too much to ask. I was just so excited to find someone so close. If you would ship chicks, I would buy a few, though I can't take 25.
