Do brown leghorns lay as many eggs as white leghorns. I think the brown leghorns are so much prettier than white leghorns. If I keep chickens, they have to be productive ones.

Well, except my Aracaunas that I am going to buy.

I have 12 brown leghorns that are 61/2 months old and they average 9 or 10 eggs per day. From what I've read the whites are more productive.

I think so. I expect them to do a little better when the weather warms up and they get a little older. They have only been laying for about 6 weeks. Good luck with whatever you decide on.

Yeah, I have heard that white leghorns are the most productive chicken there is, but I'm sure that the browns are more productive than some of the other egg layers out there.

My guess is that the "other" varieties of Leghorns will definitely earn their keep, not only in quantity of eggs but also size. I can't imagine that before the commercial breeders chose the white lines for "improving" there was all that much of a difference within the breed.

But..........I could be wrong. I have some Silver Leghorn eggs ordered, so I'm hoping for a few good layers in the hatch.

Unrelated but just noticed the names of your Dutch WB's, Killer & Perfect - that is a riot!

PICS?

Perfect benefited by my mistake when I named her brother -- I didn't have a name picked out before he was born and the Killer part of Killer Cute was all that stuck.

I looked at some hens this morning that are supposed to be brown leghorns. I don't think the man knows what he was talking about. He was also confused about what Araucanas/Ameraucanas are. He did have some nice barred rock hens, so I brought one of them home.

Where can I find a good picture of a brown leghorn ? Aren't they smaller than RIR hens ?

brown leghorns are not as much the 'powerhouse' that white leghorns are.

they are smaller bodied than RIR. Leghorns are small bodied.

if you can wait a few moments, i can go snap a few pics of mine.
