Not from this tablet I'm using. I'm referring to the wire fencing in your picture, cmom. That your chicks are in, in the post right above my comment.

That is 1"x 2" welded wire I cut to make a small temporary pen for the chicks to be out in during the day. They are now a month old, the smaller younger chicks are in melon boxes. I'm doing it this way because I have the hatchers and brooders in the chicks coop.

These are my month old Rose Comb Dark Brown Leghorn and Rose Comb RIR chicks.

These are both Single Comb and Rose Comb RIR, 2 wk old chicks.

Now I see the 1x2, thought it was 1" square mesh before. Melon boxes is a great idea! I've been brooding and raising my chicks in appliance boxes, but those look so much better and stronger.

Some pictures of my RC Brown Leghorn and RC RIR chicks. It's quite windy out today and we are on top of a hill.

I have 4 brown leghorns, now 5 wks. old. I got them at a local hatchery, sexed as pullets. Two are light in color, two are dark. I just let them out into the run for the first time 2 days ago. They are digging huge holes at an alarming rate! I find they are very friendly, but don't like to be picked up. Anyway, I got this breed for free ranging because I heard they were good at evading predators compared to other breeds. Have any of you found this to be the case?

My Browns are about the same age as yours (maybe a little younger) so I don't know about them but my Whites are a different story. I have a couple of Whites that are masters at getting out of their pen. I call them Houdini 1 and Houdini 2. They stay close to their coops. (They know how to get out and how to get back in) I put them in the Leghorn coop and pen but they always find a way out and back to their old coop and pen. They are quick. I have had a young Red-Tailed hawk around most every day and so far they have evaded the hawk.

I live in predator central. ...

I am always amazed if anything can keep alive for more than 40 minutes without bodyguards.

Logically though...I think the Browns would have the best success rate.

We have a ton of predators here also.
We have several leghorns that free range 24/7 including browns. Ive had great success with them keeping themselves safe and alive.
Honestly our whites do just as well too. We have three of each that are still here going on their 5th year.

Very encouraging! Do they go to nest boxes to lay their eggs?
