Brown Leghorns: Pics, Info, and Resources

Pics
I picked up a handful of what appear to be brown leghorn chicks from Tractor Supply in north Tx, which uses Privett hatchery out of NM. I got them clearanced at 50c each, and bought waaay more chickens than I should have! I think I have 8 BLs, 2 of which had enormous red combs at 4 weeks or earlier, so funny to see on such a young chick that I started calling them Velociroosters. I will try to post a pic when I get on something besides this tablet.

They are by far the most easily startled and dont like to settle once I have them in hand, unlike the several other breeds of chicks in the pen. I find it easier to catch them while all the others are still there, so I catch them first, move slowly and talk baby talk to them all the while. I had BL pullets the first year we raised chickens out here 20 years ago, and they tended to roost in the tree above the henhouse instead of inside! The whites and RIReds were docile and cooped up easily, but many nights I used a leg-hook to try to reach Gertrude Quackenbush and put her on the roost. One of my WLs we named Pet, as she would jump up on my back when I bent down tending them and would walk up to my shoulder as I straightened up, talking to me in curious quiet little funny noises that varied in pitch like speech! She was very friendly with everyone in the family like that, unlike the other whites, one other of which would jump up on us in curiosity, then jump off, even though the whites were used to being picked up and not flighty. I cannot imagine a brown leghorn getting that tame, ever! Maybe if you only had one, and raised it in the house like the Clampetts? I still imagine a lot of startling even if it wasn't actually afraid of you and would return. This whole thread has been very interesting, and the pics are beautiful. I learn something new every time I'm on here.

Agreed! I find it easier to snap a pic without using the flash. After 2 or 3, they take all the noises in stride and the next pic is worth waiting for. Such noise for a digital camera!

Glad you find the thread informative.

My dark browns are super flighty. They even hate it when I try to take a photo.

My dark browns are very flighty too. Right now they are in with some RC RIR chicks and usually the RIR chicks are much calmer but the Leghorn chicks get them going too. They are a month old.

Where can I find that one inch mesh fencing?

I bought a small cage made from this at a yardsale 20 years ago for 1 buck, and I have used it over and over. The cage was made to be a turtleproof fish basket, rectangular with top access lid, but i have used it as a cat carrier, daily chick transporter, and as jail hung up high on the side of the run to break a hen from setting. I would love to find some so I can make more cages for quarantine and feather pickers and a myriad other uses.

Do you have a picture you can post?
