Brown leghorns

I ended up with 7 pullets out of the 15 I got. They are now 14 or 15 weeks old and appears couple appear to be close to laying their first eggs. I rehomed the 8 cockerals as soon as their chest feathers came in and I knew they for sure where boys. The females will keep smaller combs for a while and their chest feathers will be a salmon color while the cockerlas will grow big combs real quick (I knew by 4/5 weeks which ones they were) and their chest feathers will be black. In the first picture you can actually see 4 other brown leghorns pullets. View attachment 4167340View attachment 4167346View attachment 4167347
Have you found that they’re very flighty? And it seems like they lay sooner than others? 17/18 weeks?

Well to simply put it, I had a barred rock starts laying right before 16 weeks old. So im guessing the one brown leghorn will start laying around that time as well. And ya, they are very flighty. Some will let me give them little pets on their chests but don't care much for it. They mainly avoid me like I have the plague. Even though when they were inside I was always working with them. For example at the same time I had 11 EE's and 3 blue copper marans. Those are all very friendly and will actually hop onto my lap if I sit in my lawn chair in their run or outside their run during the times I let them free range. Those 7 girls though will not come near me if they can avoid it 😪 considering how big and red the ones combs and wattles are, she isnr very big, but from what I've read they don't get big and they aren't a dual purpose breed. This is my first time with brown leghorns so I was shocked when she was 12 weeks old and growing a comb and wattles.

Aw bummer about how flighty they are. Mine are inside right now and I’ll try to work with them but I’m sure, like yours, it won’t help too much. I have red/brown sexlinks that are so friendly and always follow me around and beg for treats and pets. Super cool that they lay so quickly though! Waiting for the eggs is the worst part 😂 Thank you so much for responding ☺️

Well at least their not mean 🤣 but I just went out to their run and took pictures of the 2 that will for sure be laying eggs soon. And ya, waiting for eggs is so hard. I got 2 eggs from one of my barred rocks. But that was last week and we had a few days of in the 90s and she hasn't laid since 🙄 time to pay rent ladies!

I just love the colors of their feathers! They remind me of my cream legbars and I think they’re prob one of the prettiest chickens 😍 The heat has gotten to my layers too. They do decent in the 90s but not good at all in the 100s and that’s what we’ve been having lately and will have for another couple days. I don’t expect many eggs!

I live in northern central MN so we don't get very many hot days that exceed lower 90s. There is a chance she laid in the grass one evening cause I heard her singing her egg song. Never did find where she laid and my oldest dog can sniff them out from a mile away. So it probably got ate up before I realized it

I have one of those too. She's often walking around with an egg in her mouth and I have no idea where she's finding them.

A few weeks ago I asked about sexing day old brown leghorns. Well it was mixed answers. But now they are almost 3 weeks old and I have an update. Or at least I think this can be considered one? I think I for sure have one or 2 roos! On 2 of my brown leghorns, their combs are huge! And they are starting to turn pink while my other 13 are still small and pale. Here is a picture of one of the 2 that I believe are roos. Any thoughts? Chest feathers are just starting to come in, but are still just pins so i cant tell if they are rosy colored or black.
