After moving some boxes from a storage unit to my house this spring, I'm now noticing these ugly spiders in my house. I've killed about 8 of them in the past month, and a vet friend told me they are brown recluse spiders. I want to spray, and heard that deltamethrin (Delta Dust or D Fence SC liquid) works on them.
I read the literature on the deltamethrin ( synthetic pyrethrin) and while it's not good for your dogs if they ingest it,It is supposedly not highly toxic. It is used in some flea collars, but as it's a relatively new pesticide *to me* I want some reassurance that once dry, this stuff isn't going to poison my dogs. Also, if you've used it on the nasty brown spiders, did it kill them? Thanks for any input. Now scroll down if you want to see the scary picture (shuddering)

Follow the label instructions on the product you plan to use.

That spider looks rather large to be a brown recluse.

It is a brown recluse. I don't have dogs so I don't know what the product will do to them but my cats aren't bothered. Just don't allow the dogs around while it is wet, so I understand. I tend to favor the "smash the suckers" approach myself. No worries that way. And just an FYI if you or someone in your house gets bit by one of these lovely creatures, take benadryl and put benadryl cream on the bite. Reactions are most often caused because of an allergy to their toxin ... advice from a spider expert.

I've read the label instructions online, and they don't tell me how toxic it is to animals, just that it IS toxic to animals. Salt can be toxic, too, if consumed in large enough quantities

I'm just looking for people's experiences with this particular product, as I'm not familiar with it.

Thankfully, that photo is larger than life as I zoomed in and cropped. Actual size was probably about an inch and a half square.

Thank you for the advice, Erinszoo ! Did not know that about the Benadryl but will def have to get some of the cream to have on hand in addition to the oral stuff.
I have always HATED spiders anyway, but having these suckers just makes me absolutely shriek when surprised by one of them now. I found one on my TOWEL while getting ready to take a shower last night. Good thing I've been shaking it out ahead of time!

Wolf spiders will eat the brown recluse, although I don't particularly want EITHER in my house.

The National Pesticide Information Center is a great resource, here is their fact sheet on Deltamethrin:

http://npic.orst.edu/factsheets/DeltaGen.html#wildlife

They are a call center as well and can be of great help interpreting exactly what a label means and they tend to have a lot more information about potential health effects than a label can provide.
Thanks for the info-may have to go to the website and check it out.

I got bit by one several years ago. Still have a deep scar on my calf.

Ouch!
