I did this by simply leaning a bunch of large branches onto a living tree. Did not secure them, but they were pretty large diameter already, so really resistant to wind and being knocked around.

Don't have a great photo of it, but here is one I found that shows it a little bit. I also added some sunflower stalks to the "pile". But those will most likely decay soon and not provide any cover.

I helped a friend of mine build a wigwam out of privet and clay we also brought in wheat straw because we couldnt harvest enough wild grasses fast enough. We worked on it on and off for a few years. It also had a vent fire cover for the roof. Something like this would also be real cool to build especially if you built a wooden door and I subtracted the metal vent cover on the roof.

As @MissChick@dee mentions, a few of those would make great safe spots in otherwise open ground. I think I’ll try a few.

Thanks for the inspiration! We recently pruned our fruit trees and had a big pile of branches. Today we used them to make this chicken fort! Our chickens are only 2 weeks old, so it'll be awhile before they are able to use it, but hopefully it will provide them some protection, shade, and fun!
