I know this is a dumb question, but I would like to know. I have a 2yr old BS peacock, that I can't right off hand remember if it is an IBBS or a purple BS. Even worse, its not phenotypically a BS, most of the top 1/2 of his wings are barred, even though it was a typical BS color as a chick/ yearling. His herl (the fringe outlining his tail at rest) are copper colored, is that the normal color for a IBBS or purple BS?

Now you just know we are gonna ask for pictures, right?

And there are no dumb questions here. I'm wondering if your boy might be split BS rather than homozygous for BS... I keep hearing about split BS birds ending up with partial shoulders of each pattern, but I dunno how widespread that is, or if sometimes the BS just doesn't fully express?

Funny you should ask, yesterday I was working on an order of feathers and I took some pics to send the buyer. While I am not happy with the overall color of this picture it really makes the different hues apparent. The 2 eye feathers in the top row right side are from one of my BS males, also the one in the center of the bottom row. If you are wondering how I can tell, he carries some sort of WE split and when you turn his eye feathers a certain way they appear to have a hazy cataract in the center. He is the only one who has this. The herl along the shaft is very coppery/purple looking, not as green as the other feathers. Also the herl around the eye itself has a very strong gold hue. If I remember correctly the herl on a Purple birds feathers will not have any gold tones.

If I am correct in saying that BS is autosomal recessive, then its not because the bird is split to BS. It could be an age thing, i guess. Pictures, I've got, although they aren't good enough to show much. Its getting them on the computer and from there I haven't managed to figure out.

I should have just asked you if his wings/shoulders are black or brown? I just picked up a Purple BS Pied, who is either coming 2 or coming 3? His wing and shoulders are a brown or tan, because the purples fade, an IBBS will not fade, wings and shoulders where not striped will start black and remain black.

We can walk you through getting the photos onto the computer. It's so much easier to put up photos on BYC than trying to post photos on the UPA forum, it's wunnerful over here
