Bucket feeders

How long does it usually take the chickens to figure out the bucket feeders? I switched over from PVC feeders to bucket feeders today.

If your talking about the no waste feeder style with the elbows, fill the elbow up so they can see the feed and it shouldn't take but a few hours, if that long. It's something different to them, so they will be cautious. You can make a paper funnel and pour feed into it, to get feed into the elbow

I was jist coming to ask this. Glad I looked for a thread BYC never lets me down. Im gonna do a tote with 6 elbows.i have 13 chickens is that enough "elbow room".

I have a 55 gallon tote and a cat litter bucket. They figured it out easily. Just put some feed right on the edge of the entrance.

Is any tote ok? Theres no worry about chemical leeching or anything? I want to use the big tough totes HD sells but they have a strong smell to them that kinda worries me. If its washed out it should be ok right?

I’ve never seen a tote with a strong scent to it. I would let it air out for several days to a week. Once it doesn’t have a scent, go for it.
