buckeye chickens

I'm very interested in getting some Buckeyes. I garden, and really like bantam chickens because they don't tear up my plants like standard chickens do. Does anybody have thoughts on bantam Buckeyes? Are they similar in temperament to the large variety, and are they pretty darn cold hardy also? I have an unheated but insulated coop, and it gets really cold in the winter here.

We use ours as dual purpose. They lay a nice amount of medium sized brown eggs, and the extra cockerels dress out very nicely.

I am about to get some Buckeye bantams (just won a pair on eggbid.com today) and will be wintering them outside this year. I'll let you know how they do!

This trick works for most breeds of chickens (those that are not "hen feathered"):

Hold a bird in your hand with its head towards you, tail facing away. Look down at the saddle feathers. Look closely. Are they pointy-tipped, or rounded? If pointy, the bird is likely a male. If rounded, the bird is likely a female. Same with hackle feathers.

And by 8 weeks the males should be taller, with thicker, longer legs and feet.

I am so conflicted, as the seminar is on the same weekend as the Ohio National show, and I just can't miss that! I really wanted to go, but can't...

Actually, they were a cross of a Buff Cochin male onto Barred Rock hens. The hens from that mating were crossed with a Red Breasted Indian Game. Later on some did add some "pea comb" Rhode Island Red blood when the APA failed to recognise the pea comb RIR. Just getting startedw ith Buckeyes, but am very pleased with them. Have a local friend taht helped me get stated with some of her eggs. She also hatched the eggs. Great to have friends. Research tells me there is quite a bit of deffierence in hatchery quality and the ALBC and show quality lines. Most show quality lines have ALBC and Urch blood. On the Buckeye forums it is clear that the hatchery birds are jsut not as large as the ALBC/SQ lines. Saw that years ago in large fowl Orpingtons. You can learn more about the Buckeye at http://www.buckeyechickens.com He is the breeder of my chicks grandparents.
