buckeye chickens

Hi everyone.

I have had Buckeye for the last five years. They are a good dual purpose bird. When buckeyes were developed one of the breeds used was cornish so the buckeye have a stocky build. They have the pen combs which make them really cold hardy. They grow at about the same as most breeds so not fast growing like the cornish cross. They lay meduim to large brown eggs. They are a gentle, calm breed. I have yet to hear one roar, however they do make a different noise that I guess some may think sounds like a roar. Not close as far as I am concerned.

They are a easy keeper and I am surprised that more people don't raise them.

Hope this helps. I may post some pictures later. The posted picture is a good picture of a buckeye rooster.

I was flipping through the SOP the other day and landed on buckeyes and thought I saw something about them having malay in them. I relooked today and this is what it says about them:

An American breed originating in Ohio with the color similar to the richly colored buckeye nut. Their blood lines include the dark cornish, BBR game, buff cochin, and barred plymouth rock. In body shape as wel as comb they resemble the early cornish of the 1905 period with stout muscular thighs, broad and well rounded breast carried well up but without the extra breadth of shoulder of the cornish. An active dual purpose breed.

It says BBR game which were probably modern games. I say that because in my 1920, 1923, and 1926 standards they list modern games as just games.

I have several hens and would love to have more, they really are a neat bird, and the rare Ohio heritage thing doesn’t hurt. If I’m raising chickens anyways I might as well have some with personality and a story to tell.
Peace,
Dave

I would also be interested in some Buckeye hatching eggs

I don't know why they aren't popular either other than I had to search to find a hatchery that had them. Or maybe some people think a rooster needs one of those tall single combs?

I just ordered 14 st run from Meyer because of that little comb and that they look to be nice beefy chickens. I've got 20 meat chicks in my garage right now and the way those things grow just bothers me. I, too, am looking for a good homestead type bird.

I threw in some GL Wyandottes just to round out the order. I figured I had a better chance getting 14 buckeyes this time of year than 25.

I have my buckeye chicks!! They are beautiful and quite nice when held. I ordered 10, received 11. The only problem is one is blind and possibly deaf. She's separated from the others since they ran her over and pushed her out of the water area. She is so sweet, so very sweet. She has slept with me throughout the night. I'm trying to prepare myself for her expiration...but deep inside I hope she makes it!

I am SO excited! I heard that someone had some available for sale, so I'll be calling first thing monday to order. I'm hoping to get a couple of dozen pullet chicks and a few boys and will cull if they all survive.
