I rescued a large red hen i thought was a Rhodie Island Red, but seeing her talon makes me wonder if she might be a Buckeye instead. Anyone familiar with the Buckeye breed ? She dominated the hen house upon entry. I am sure she is not a rooster, we had 2 of them rescued at same time and do know the difference there. I am wondering if the Buckeye hens have one talon normally.

What do you mean by one talon?

Buckeyes aren't like your average Rhode Island Red (considering the average RIR is poor in quality, small, and dull orange in color) - Buckeyes have a fierce expression, large bulky brick-like body, and a small pea comb (three rows of bumps) Plus they're a deep, rich, dark red in color.

Nope buckeyes are square shaped. They don't have a Feirce expression and most have similar color to hatchery rir ( exept males)

From the SOP -

Eyes: medium size, full, with bold expression

Comb: Pea; of medium size; firm, set closely to head

Those two combined provide for a slightly fierce expression, at least in my opinion. Pea combs always add to it in particular.

The colors of Buckeye females I see aren't really as light as most Production Reds, but hey, this isn't a place to discuss the differences.

Buckeyes don't look like RIR except both are brown.

Buckeyes are all pea comb
