Buckeyes

Just a word of warning.
I don't mean to trash talk anyone or their operation but what I have found to be fact is that almost all of the larger hatcheries are not producing quality stock for th buckeyes as well as many other breeds. Dark Eggs is utterly unwilling to discuss the lineage of their stock and this worries me much! Any breeder who is selling stock should be willing to discuss the origins of his fowls or it looks like he has something to hide. Ideal has declined as well. Both places have provided me with, shall we say, less than quality stock. I don't have a problem with these guys and I still order some breeds from them, it's just the rarities and standards that they seem to have a problem with.

Welp, Inc. has the best that I have seen from a major hatchery. I found that the breeding stock that they shipped me produced true to type chicks. I hope that no one feels like I am slamming anyone and most of all I hope this helps. I am not plugging Welp and I don't work for them or anything, I just find that in my expierence they seem to have the best stock available from a larger hatchery. you can find them at www.welphatchery.com

Thanks for the warning and recommendation.

Not a problem at all.
I guess that it is possible that they have revamped the operation and they may even be willing to discuss the lineage of the birds now so don't be shy. They may be willing to discuss this with you now. It never hurts to try. I always try to exhaust all options before I settle on any one thing from any one place.

Sandhill preservation is a great place with great people. I can't speak for the buckeyes but the farm is amazing!

They (shady lane) only advertise chick assortments on their website. I don't think you can get all of one breed.

Sandhill's waiting list is long, but I think it'd be worth it to get on it even if I had to wait until next year to get the chicks.

I am looking for some Buckeyes to start a small flock with also. However I do not recommend Ideal poultry for anything. I have had terrible luck with their birds dying soon after receiving them. Or they send the wrong birds then send more wrong birds and it never gets resolved.

Thank you for the note on Welp hatchery, I have had horrible luck with Ideal . I would never order from them again. I read other people have great luck with them but I would just call it luck. Birds that dropped dead one after the other soon as I got them was the worst . Apparently they did not believe me they would not replace them.
