Just been reading the posts and catching up. Celtic is right about donkeys and dogs they know. We have two donkeys that we keep primarily because they eat the thistles that at one time a few years ago were threatening to take over our back pastures. Ours don't bother our two dogs a bit. I'm thinking of maybe getting another one to guard my flock of ducks and geese, especially since I want to get some Pilgrim geese and meat ducks this spring. At this point, I don't think I could talk the family into another large dog, even if it did live outside.

I am rooting for you, Marty, and hoping the prosecutor can help you out so you don't wind up having to pay a lawyer to get restitution from these irresponsible people. In Texas, there's no problem in shooting somebody's dog if it is harassing or killing your livestock. The dog owners have no recourse against you if their dog is messing with your animals. I would have thought Kansas would have a similar law, since it is such a big farm state. I'm really surprised that they couldn't hold the dogs for all the damage they did, even if they didn't bite a person. One of them did try to attack a police officer, didn't he?

Sounds like your girls are coming around the bend and are now starting to mend. I know you have the prayers and good wishes of LOTS of people!! Including me!

How do you go about finding what's legal in your state? Are these called livestock protection laws or more of, where I'm allowed to use a firearm within a property? I dont even know how I'd phrase the question if I called my local sheriff's office.

GB, Florida has a right to farm act and right to protect law. It allows anyone who feels threatened or that their live stock is threatened to protect them. It also allows you to shoot any dog that is on your property threatening you, your family, our live stock as well. most can be on the fresh from florida website if I remember correctly. (been awhile since i read it all)
