Buff orp and new hamp red, age to lay???

I am thinking about buying some buff orps and new hamp reds alreay 5 weeks old. What age, on average, do they start laying? Just wondering bc I was thinking of getting some day old rir and I read that they mature faster, so I was just wondering the difference.

My rir's started laying when they where around 20 weeks but on average all chicken start about from 20 to 25 weeks.

My 3 buffs are a BO/Australorp cross we suspect...and they were born in June of 2007 and began laying February 2, 2008...so that made them 8 months old (but consider, I did NOT have a heat lamp for winter laying...I give all my ladies the winter off)...so that might be reason for any delay.

The good general rule is 20 weeks. These are living creatures and nothing is etched in stone. Depends on nutrition, lighting, time of year they were hatched etc... It is usually in the 20 week area, give or take some time.

I think my BOs were the last to lay of my flock around 28 weeks. . .

They are very nice birds though. . .

I have one BO that started laying at 25 weeks and one that is 27 weeks and is still not laying but is close. Her comb and wattles are very red and she squats.
