Hello everyone, my name is LeeLee and I’m going to be a first time chick momma this spring. I live in Philadelphia and we are allowed to have six hens in our backyard. I plan on getting six different breeds for a colorful egg basket. I also want to try six breeds to learn more about them. I’m in the process of researching where I can possibly purchase all six from the same hatchery and possibly pick them up opposed to having them shipped. Worse case scenario I’ll go to a few different hatcheries to get them. I look forward to gaining valuable information from the forums.

A big howdy from NE Alabama!

I've purchased chicks (also had them vaccinated) from Hoover's Hatchery and "knock on wood" I've never lost a chick during shipping. Try to get your chicks from one Hatchery that way they will all be approximately the same age. If you purchase chicks at Tractor Supply or Rural King, they also buy from Hoover's, the chick's will not be vaccinated.

Good luck! Wishing you hours of love and happiness with your new flock. 💕

Hello and welcome to BYC! :frow Glad you joined.
Don't forget to research and build a properly designed and sized structure to house them. Lots of folks that get cold winters made the egregious mistake of not giving their focus enough ventilation and coop and protected run space in the winter.
