Buff Orp Rooster Survey

I have a Lavender Orphan from HinkJC and I would say he is a 4. Really pretty tame, not cuddly but when you catch him he is docile. At night he goes into the coop first and he always lets me pat his back for a minute before he turns away. I have Jersey Giant and an Easter Egger roos as well and he is by far the most gentle...not a Buff but Orpington just the same.

So here are 2 hens... no eggs yet. Could #84 be a roo? She/ it looked like #93 up until a few weeks ago. Do some hens look like this? There's no sign of a spur poking thru.

I think it's a pullet. And a tip on spurs - none of the orp roos I've had so far showed any signs of growing spurs until way after you knew for sure it was a roo.

So the more developed flaps and head thingy (crest?) means she is more develloped then? You know whats funny I've always pictured her like bounty from chicken run- 5 eggs a day lol. I know thats wont happen. She is my prettiest one too almost 5 months old.

The flaps are wattles and the top thing is called a comb. Yes, she's more developed. And their combs start getting really red just before they start to lay.

If she is 5 months old, you will be finding round/oval brown things in her coop soon! Obviously, you are a novice at chickens. But you have started correctly. BYC is a wealth of knowledge. Please do not allow anyone to make you feel illiterate. We all started where you are. If you have a question, search first. If you can not find it, then start a thread, under the appropriate category, and ask BYC. Someone will have the answer. The only stupid question is the one you fail to ask.

Thanks for the help. I couldn't think of any terminology for the life of me

, combs I knew........ waffles didn't know. Now I do :)

I grew up around chickens and have owned them before but they were barred rock hens, RI reds, and bantams)- I never really got into learning details before. Now I am trying to be sustainable, and have plenty of eggs and meat in my yard. I believe in the wealth of accumulative knowledge. I also want to know as much as I can about what I care for. I want my children to learn things right from the begining.

I have never dealt with orps before- they are quite new too me. The only roosters I've been around are Bantams- which are the sweetest little things. I have a very large pen but knowing the size they will become and also having pekings..... I think I need to build another pen with a shelter- maybe for the roosters. My barn is 6x6, with a 2x6 egg laying an chick section. my pen is 23x14 with the barn on the ouside, and the chick yard in 5x5. I have 30 buff orps and 3 peking's, 7 of them are roos and 4 are due for the freezer in 3 months.

I am waiting patiently for my eggs, they turn 5 months on the 5th. Tick-tock tick-tock

I am eager- though the little brats keep scratching all the stuffing off the laying nests.

My intent was not to make anyone feel "less than" but rather to educate. I mean, they don't exactly teach people what Wattles (sounds almost exactly like waddles) and Combs are on a chicken in school and we aren't born with this knowledge. Welcome to the chicken world and yes, you've come to the right place!

I've been on forums and boards on the internet since it's inception and this is the best boards ever!
