Our wonderful Buff Orpington died suddenly last week... found her in the morning. She appeared healthy... eating etc. Even layed an egg the afternoon before she died.
She was large. She was hesitant to jump off a high roost she managed to fly to. I've heard of chickens damaging organs from falls. Any other thoughts on such a sudden death?

Sorry to hear she died so suddenly. I've heard of a small dog jumping off a couch and breaking its neck and dying, so the same could happen for a chicken if they landed wrong. Especially if she broke a bone and it punctured a vital organ or something like that. did you feel her body for injuries?

Probably a heart attack. That's usually the cause when an apparently healthy bird dies suddenly. Not uncommon.

Something about chickens. Every once in a while, they just fall over dead. Lost a breeding roo a few weeks ago, all was well one day, dead the next. Kind of wondered about broken neck, or heart attack or something.
