Hi all...when I went to let my ladies out for their daily excursion into the yard, I noticed my Buff Orpington hen seems to have a bit of a dirty vent. First, the necessary information:
1) What type of bird , age and weight. -- BO, 6 months, and...I have no idea, but she is one hefty lady! =-o
2) What is the behavior, exactly. -- She is acting fine, running around, eating, making me chase her halfway around the yard to get a look at her....in other words, except for the diarrhea, she's acting totally nutty and normal.
3) Is there any bleeding, injury, broken bones or other sign of trauma. Nope
4) What happened, if anything that you know of, that may have caused the situation. -- I have no idea!
5) What has the bird been eating and drinking, if at all. -- They get their layer pellets, plus kitchen scraps and whatever bugs/vegetation they find foraging in the yard...but we have nothing poisonous or dangerous in the yard.
6) How does the poop look? Normal? Bloody? Runny? etc. -- Clear with brown parts and runny. It looks fairly like one of the "normal" poops on the handy poop chart site, but just like it got on her backside instead of making it to the ground.
7) What has been the treatment you have administered so far? None yet. Not sure if she's sick or if she just ate something funky.
8 ) What is your intent as far as treatment? For example, do you want to treat completely yourself, or do you need help in stabilizing the bird til you can get to a vet? -- Hoping it doesn't need vet care, but I will take her if it's necessary.
9) If you have a picture of the wound or condition, please post it. It may help. Haven't gotten a pic yet...I can see about getting one, though.
10) Describe the housing/bedding in use. Pine shavings.
I don't believe she is egg bound...she just laid an egg yesterday, rather late in the day, so she's not really off her schedule yet. But I will keep an eye on her and make sure that's not what it is. She pooped when I was trying to get her back in her run, and it was more of the same kind of stuff.
I guess I'm wondering if chickens are like people, and sometimes they just have...you know...issues? And it's not really caused by anything specific, or at least nothing to worry about? Anyway, any advice or thoughts would be great!
