My 1 year old buff orphington hen is behaving oddly-- for the past day or so she has had a droopy tail and just sort of stands around in one place. She will peck at stuff in front of her and is walking OK. Color seems normal too. I just isolated her from the flock and did not notice anything strange physically except her crop seems bulgy. It's sort of squishy and distended, but there's no foul odor from beak. Do I need to take her to the vet for treatment? Anyone have experience with this? I need to check my other chickens to compare the crops-- maybe it's always like this and I never noticed but she is not behaving normally. thanks! lucy

All I can say is keep an eye on her crop. I had similar symptoms in my BO and Maran and they both wound up with impacted crops. The faster you can discover what is wrong, the less weight and strength she'll loose and have a better chance of survival. Check for sour smells it also could be a sour crop... I'd look up apple cider vinegar (ACV) and sour crop and impacted crop, the search tool on the forum is great.

It may be none of those, but may as well rule it out. Good luck and hope this all ends well.

Lucy just happens to be one of my favorite names. I had a grandmother named Lucy and that's what I called her always. None of the Grandma stuff for her!

Sorry, TMI and OT together!

She may have impacted crop or what really sprang to mind was egg bound, because of the tail being down. I don't have hands-on experience with either, but I know that searching on BYC will really help you narrow it down.
Is she a layer, and if yes, when was the last time she laid?
