So I bought some chicks from red barn recently and have been raising them together. The sign on the box said they were all Buff Orpingtons however as I’ve researched more and read about them I have yet to see a Buff Orpington that isn’t golden and out of the three I purchased together one of them was not golden? Sorry if this come off as pretty clueless or if the answer is obvious, this is the first time I’ve raised chickens so I’m not sure about all of this. I’ve included pictures of the chick when we got him and pictures taken earlier today and was wondering if it’s not a buff Orpington if anyone could help identify it?. ( also what gender do you guys think the chick is? From what I’ve read it seems to be a cockerel?)

thank you in advance! 😅

When we got them we were told they were about a week old so from that info they’re officially 8 weeks

This is not any kind of Orpington. I have black lavender splits and he doesn’t even come remotely close to them even. He is not one. They are heavier bodied birds and they have larger ganglier feet/toes if that makes sense. I like to call them dinosaur birds until they get closer to full grown especially the black Orpingtons. The buffs not so much. This is a cross breed or something or other that you got thrown in there and suckered with I’m afraid.

After reading all the Buff Orpington threads here I was afraid he would be a mix of something as I couldn’t find any chicken remotely close to what he looked like 😭

Your first 2 pictures look identical to my 2 girls which are Welsummer. Mine have turned out to be very sweet, docile and love attention.
