BO's are one of my favorites! I think every flock could use a few! I have three. They are marvelous!

The time to deal with a "bad dog" or "killer dog" is way way before it's bitten two humans. Humans can get diseases or even cancers from dog bites not to mention the scars and danger to livestock and trespassing. I think I found the problem is your belief that you have to be patient as if this is a problem being worked on by the neighbor and might improve.
Makes me flash back to a scene from "Network" where he says "please just leave us alone in our living rooms!" They sell lots of 22LR rifles for under $200 for good reason - the "perfect for all varmints" tool. If you are a die hard bleeding heart lover of all animals (even killer dogs that are just too small to kill humans) you could always go for the air rifle 17 caliber and put a couple of pellets in his hind haunches but then the neighbor might send you the vet bill. Dead dogs don't have vet bills.
Much as I love (and use) 22LR for my farm to scare off coyotes and anything uninvited getting cozy or curious around my livestock pens, you might want to price and secure some 22LR ammo before going the 22 route. The prices are literally insane right now. I've never seen anything like it before. Check this http://ammoseek.com/ammo/22lr has it this morning at a minimum of 17 cents per round for ammo that for many years was never more than 5 cents per. Want good brand name Rem or Federal type stuff? try 20-25 cents!I have a .177 air rifle next to my window that overlooks the coop. Last week a fox suddenly showed up. s/he killed two of my big girls and badly wounded my Silkie roo and a guinea hen. Next time the bugger showed up s/he got nailed! I love animals as much or more than anyone else, but when an animal is set on wiping out my flock, I'm sorry but it's my job to protect them and my property. My next purchase will be a .22.
1876 farm, Wow! What a coop! Is the one in your avatar yours? I need close ups!

Seriously considering alternatives myself like a high end 22 air rifle. I wonder if they make a CO2 air rifle that is powerful enough for varmints that can be recharged from my seltzer co2 soda tank? That may be the next way to go for me. That or a fancy custom wrist rocket sling shot
I am getting 10 BO chicks In 3 weeks. (8 pullets & 2 Roos) I can hardly wait. I like the docile nature I hear about this breed. That's my main reason for wanting them. I think they will make a great addition to our farm.
Nice looking Buff on your avatar. Is he yours ?![]()
I would use the .22 strictly for varmint control. The problem with the air rifle is that you can't reload fast enough, you just have the one round in the chamber. So if you miss (or want to finish the job), you have to stop to reload - a PITA. My air rifle is a Gamo .177 with a break barrel. Goodness, it takes everything I've got to pump that thing!
It would be worth the money to invest in a new gun and ammo (try Cheaperthandirt.com?). My two hens were great egg producers even in the most bitter weather. My entire neighborhood enjoyed their big tan eggs. I was even thinking of selling at the farmer's market here. Even ordered egg cartons. That dang-gum fox pretty much destroyed everything. My chicks will not be ready to lay for another six months, not to mention it crazes me to think of the loss of my two girls, Princess and Gilly. So tomorrow I'll be checking out the guns at Dick's or the local mom & pop gun store.![]()
Quote: Yes. I think the scream would be fantastic.
I love your blog. I might have to spend some time there.
