*Buff Orpington Thread!*

The man I got him from had 1 more (my roos brother) only paid $10 I would have bought other too but only need 1 rooster due to I only have 1 hen left right now. will be getting some hens soon. Know of any orpington hens for sale or free is better.

Sorry countryhen, I have a few, but too far away. He looks like my rooster Mr. Peeps.... they are so pretty. Sunny is a great name. We have a yellow striped cat named Captain Sunny.

Hi all! I'm a new chicken owner so forgive my obvious ignorance. I bought 3 hens at a livestock sale, 2 of which I'm fairly certain are buffs. Everything I've read says how friendly they are, but I can't support that based on my girls. They will peck you if you have food and if you don't they still act like they are planning on pecking. Obviously I don't know how they were treated before they came to our house but friendly isn't really how I'd describe them. Pushy, pecky pigs more like! Any idea what to try to decrease the pecking? Not gonna lie, I'm kinda scared to try and pick them up...that first peck hurt!!

Welcome ! Photos ? Orps are big birds, and they can peck hard. If you snatch your hand back they will peck harder. Try feeding small pieces of bread by crumbling it up, and dropping it on the ground instead.

Orps rarely peck when you pick them up , if you know how to properly pick up, and hold a chicken. They get scared if they think you will drop them, not if held gently, and securely.

I always thought the eyes are on the side of the head..they have to turn to look at you..horses step on your feet because thier close up vision isnt good..I wonder if chickens are the same..they seem to zero in on things on the ground thou..maybe Im wrong..binoc vision seems pretty good when they find a bugg.. I dont hand feed mine much . But I do pick them up and inspect them time to time..once you know how to hold them correctly they dont mind the inspection at all..

I'd never try to feed them by hand...I would lose a finger! I had a bag of scraps in my hand and went in the pen to dump them out. Before I dumped the scraps, I noticed the water dish was dirty so I bent over to empty it and quick as a flash she pecked my arm hard enough to leave a bruise through a fleece jacket. If I have bread they swarm me and try to peck at my feet if I'm too slow. Anything slower than light speed is too slow in their book. If I don't have food, they mostly don't try to peck my feet...mostly. I have started trying to gently touch their backs as they walk around me and they are less than thrilled but just move away. Maybe I'll get brave and try picking one up...what would the proper way be? Full body armor?

Everyone but my 6 year old has been pecked. The 2 year old will tell you quick...yellow chick peck me!

We like our girls and they are good egg layers but they aren't exactly friendly. I'll look for a pic, but I don't think its a close up.
