John,
Well, I sure don't know my chickens. I have a black Orpington and probably the last two weeks she has been mounting some of the hens. I was told she was a pullet when I got her so I figured she was. She was four months old. I asked some BYC peeps about it and they talked about chickens and dominance. Today I was standing in the kitchen and heard her crowing. I had no idea she was a roo. Any chance she could be a hen. Now I know why she hasn't laid any eggs. She was crowing a lot. I can send a picture of her if you like. I didn't even think she looked like a rooster.

I for one would love to see a pic of your Black Orp roo. I might be in the same boat as you as I have a little 16 week old Choc Orp of undetermined gender. Some days I am positive he/she is a pullet, other days I am sure he/she is a roo. I see that you got him when he was 4 months old but how old was your roo when he finally started crowing?

This is my black Orpington. I thought she was a hen. Now I know why she hasn't laid any eggs yet. She is 8 months old. To me she looks like a big fat hen. I picked her up this morning and she must weigh 10 pounds. She's huge. I thought roos were always very colorful. She fooled me. Plus the person I bought her from sold her to me as a pullet. She has been mounting the other hens for two weeks. I guess she was just warming up for the crow.

Here is another picture of my Black Orpington. It is really much blacker then the picture and has a lot of green in it's feathers also.
