*Buff Orpington Thread!*

I agree with Abbevilleoz and Wyorp Rock! Hatcheries, as long as they are reputable are wonderful because they allow us to choose specific breeds if we wish to. I got my hens as week old chicks from a hatchery an hour from me. I was able to get an assortment which worked because I knew nothing about chickens - I don't know much, but I am obsessed. I told everyone that I was fillingmy "empty nest" which was true because the last "little one" started college last year.

I posted my original question because I couldn't read all the pages between this one and the first one, so I didn't see the wonderful discussion about how people started to have crosses. Unless you are planning on selling purebred birds there is no need to demand purebred birds. If you are, then purchase your eggs from the most reputable hatchery that you can find.

I love my girls! They are the best

Cackle Hatchery gets my vote for best advertising. They post videos of all their breeding stock on YouTube not just the chicks like most hatcheries. Unless you are an expert on breed SOP you can't tell what a chick will grow up to be.

I'm not sure how the Cackle Hatchery paragraph got added to my post - I haven't any experience with them. I will have to check them out because they sound good.

That was my mistake, sorry. Typed in the wrong spot. I've never ordered chicks from there. I just like that they show you their breeding stock so you'll know what the chicks will look like when they mature

No problem! I'm still getting used to how to quote, and do other stuff on BYC. I think that I've got the smileys down!

My first Buff was an older hen named Biscuit.

She came from a lady that is active in animal rescue and ended up with one too many chickens. She was a really opinionated hen that ended up being kicked out of the coop after only one year due to her constantly challenging the lead Roo, Sir Galahad. Before she disappeared she hatched out a clutch of eggs, only one of which was hers.

"Her" chicks:

The only Roo was Sir Galahad who was NOT a Turken!

The BO got left out one night and got eaten, one Turken was put down due to injuries, another vanished and the one remaining one (a Roo I named Peregrine) disappeared late last year. She vanished sometime last summer.

Right now I have three BO pullets that I bought to keep my Silkie X BR chicks company.
