I'm in love! What a great photo. Wish we could keep them tiny a bit longer!

Hi, We are new here on this site. Just getting chickens for the first time! We joined to learn as much as we could. We are putting up our coop soon. We have four buff orpington chicks coming about April 12 or so in the mail! We are so excited. We have made a brooder with a Rubbermaid tote and it's all ready! :) We are trying to get the area of the yard by the woodshed ready to set up the coop. The snow finally went away, but it's all mud now and we pick up our coop and run on March 28. No way to set it up there until the ground dries out and we can get in there and work. Guess we'll have to set it aside until we can get the area dug and leveled off...:( Buff chicks are coming in mid April and will be anywhere from a month to about 8 weeks old. At least the brooder is all set. We are just hoping we don't do anything wrong---Seems like there is a lot to remember! Here is the spot we are working on for our coop and run We built that fence! We'll extend it to enclose the whole coop and run later this spring. Here is Adam and a neighbor boy helping him. Lol, it's mud season in New Hampshire!
Looking good! You couldn't have picked a better breed to start with! Did you get all pullets?

Hi!!! New to BYC... and just got my first 5 little chickies last week. This is my Buff Orpington, Lucy. She is by far, the sweetest of my 5. And they are actually all very friendly and sweet. She will climb up into my hand and then just settle down and sit. If I pet her, she'll just fall asleep. I have a feeling she'll be the best hen!
Beautiful chicks!

AGREED! I snagged up 3 at the store the other day! They are going so fast this year! I went to my local farm store and they didn't have any shipments coming in until very end of April! Everybody is placing orders, because they are such prolific layers and there temperament is great! I could cradle mine in my arms like a baby!

My 4 Buff O chicks are now 3+ weeks old and are the cutest little things. For some reason they are about half the size of my Buff O/Welsummer crosses and I've noticed that two of them are very light colored, almost white compared to the regular Buff O 'gold' colored chicks. I think I've posted this pic before but if you look closely at the three chicks to the left of momma Aggie, you will see what I am talking about.

The middle chick of the three is almost gold but the chicks on either side of it are paler in comparison. The little girl or guy on the left under mom is the last chick to hatch and actually came from an abandoned egg that I hatched out in the house. It's name is Rocky due to it's rocky start in life. But is this color variation normal in BO chicks? Will they feather out with the regular BO gold or be lighter in color?
