*Buff Orpington Thread!*

I have 6 one year old BO Hens, 4 6+week old juveniles of which I think 3 may be pullets

. One audacious and completely lovable 1 year old Buff rooster. As far as being friendly is concerned, sometimes I wish they had a little more of our Welsummer's aloofness.

Not really, but my girls like to mob me when I come into the run and I'd better have something for them in my hands or I will be getting the stink eye from them.

As for training them to get used to me and being handled, I started giving them little pieces of whole wheat bread that I held in the palm of my hand. Dried meal worms work well also but remember, if you are brooding your own chicks, they really don't know what it's all about. No momma hen to teach them, so you will have to be patient. Sooner or later one of the braver chicks will dare to take a peck and that is all it will take to start the 'keep away' frenzy. Patience is your key word. BO's are naturally curious and friendly birds. Once they learn to trust you they will become velcro chickens that are always following you around for treats and will never turn down a pat. Most hens are a little flighty till they start to breed and lay, so once again patience.......and bread........lots and lots of whole wheat bread.

Haha, thanks for that!! I have found the secret of mealworms with my middle age brooder kids. 5 Silkies, 2 Barred Rocks and 2 Silver Laced Wyandottes. I originally had the 2 BR and 2 SLW and 1 Silkie in there, then my daughter gave me 4 more Silkies. My original group was calm and docile until I added the 4 new Silkies.. now they are all crazy. :( Very flighty and afraid of every little movement. BUT, I do have one very curious little BR! She peeks at me and watches me when I'm in there.. I sit and hang my head and/or my hand over the edge of the brooder... so last night, I got out the bag of mealworms. I took one at a time and just held it in there... hahaha... that little BR is also a little piggy!! She got to where I could put my hand in there empty and she'd come running over. A couple of the Silkies got brave a couple times and snatched the mealworm and ran, but they are still really afraid. It makes me sad.

I'm trying to tame them, but I'm not sure if I'm going about it the right way.

It sounds like you are doing good. As microchick said, patience is key.
I also found that having a BRIGHT container to hold treats works well. My DH drinks a lot of gatorade in the summer so I have a couple of bright orange containers. They see bright orange, hear a shake/rattle (corn, sunflower, what ever) and a "here chick chick.." they come running. It's a good way to train them to come. Occasionally one of my girls slips out the door before it shuts (I don't free range) and the orange can is a great way to call them back to you without running down a chicken, which is incredibly hard to do

Thank you.... but, I am not a patient person. Ugh. I'm trying.. but I don't really feel like I'm getting anywhere. I was.. that first night. But tonight, I tried to give them some more of the mealworms, but they acted like they either didn't want them or didn't know what to do with them.

I don't have any Gatorade containers... hmmm.... and I'm not crazy about the orange Gatorade.. lol Maybe I can come up with something. I didn't know chickens' had eyesight that was that great... lol

I'll be so glad when I can get my kids out in the coop and run. The coop is getting there... my bf got the rafters done today. Yay. :D But the weather is gross. Cold and rainy. I'm ready for some warm weather!!!

The funny thing about my rooster is that He has taught himself a trick. He stands about 6-8 inches in front of me and catches pieces of bread that I toss to him in mid air, breaks them up and gives them to his hens. Now the hen's have watched him and cut out the middle man, catching their own treats. I've noticed that Buffs seem to really enjoy interacting with people more than the other breeds of birds in my flock. Their willingness to learn tricks is just a bonus.

*DreamsInPink* It doesn't have to be a gatorade container, find a cheap colorful tin at the dollar store or something like that. Something the treats will rattle in.
I've found one of my BO girls absolutely loves pink-I have a shirt that has pink flowers in it and she goes bonkers trying to jump up to "touch" the pink. Also I have a hat that I put a hot pink flower in the band, she hops and hops until I lift her up so she can "touch" that too

such a character she is.

Here's about chicken eyesight if you are interested:

*microchick* Those BO boys sure do like to feed the girls. Mine especially wants ALL the grapes handed to just him so he can feed the girls, it's so funny he tries to crowd them out, but they will literally climb over, under and sometimes on top of him to get to those grapes. He only eats maybe one himself the rest goes to his beauties

LOL I know it doesn't have to be a Gatorade container. :p I was just thinking bright. I'm betting they wouldn't care if it was a camo tin as long as it had yummy treats in it. That is just adorable about the pink! I bet your BO and I would get along famously! Thank you for that link. I'm very interested in reading it. That's very interesting about the roosters feeding their hens... adorable!!!!! I didn't know that!

First broody of the year, as usual, is Orp! Here she is in a strop this morning when I took her off her empty nest!
