*Buff Orpington Thread!*

Is this normal reddening for a 8-9 week old pullet?

I agree...looks like a pullet!

We're newbies here and newbies at backyard chicken keeping. We got our coop and run up last weekend but are still 'tricking it out' and predator-proofing it, etc. This morning our 4, 4 week old buff orpington chicks came in the mail. They were active and so much fun in just a couple hours. I have held them and sung to them so I can train them. We are so excited! Kind of scared too, because it's a big responsibility---you love the little guys and want to keep them safe and healthy. I worry about things that can go wrong and wish I knew more. Trying to learn all we can, but sometimes it seems a little overwhelming. The chicks are happily doing what chicks do in the brooder we made from a Rubbermaid tote and set on a table. Here in NH, I won't be putting them in the coop for several weeks yet. Here are some pictures we took when the arrived this AM!

Here are a few pics of my little fluffy butts!! They are so adorable... :) 12 of them. I had one with pasty bottom, the one with the red sharpie mark on it's head.. But it seems to be doing fine now. I got them Monday the 4th, and they were only 2 days old then... so 5 days old today? :D

They are adorable! 12 of them....hmmm...I have a mixed flock, but I would love to have more BO's. They just are the sweetest girls.

Thanks!! I was only going to get 6, but my bf said we may as well get 12. They are straight run. So we may end up with a few cockerels too. Which may be fine. I'm quite new to chicken keeping... Only been a chicken mama for about 5 weeks. I have 3 brooders in my house with 4 different age groups among them. I think I'm crazy!! And my bf wholeheartedly agrees. lol

I've read that they are super egg layers and can also make a nice meat chicken. And that their personalities are top notch. That is what I'm hoping for. I'm super excited. Our coop is getting there. Floor and walls are done... just need the roof and doors and windows. And all the inside stuff of course. :D

How many BOs do you have? Do you hand tame them when they are little?

I have two BO girls and one BO boy, they are just shy of 8mos. now. One girl lays about 6eggs/wk, the other is smaller (maybe a runt) and lays about 4-5eggs/wk. Nice eggs, so can't complain. Haven't gotten into the meat department yet, but have read they are good for that too.
As far at taming, it depends on how much interaction you want. Some chickens naturally want to have more human contact than others, so the one's that want it I give it, the others want to be "recognized" but want no part of petting/holding so I leave them be. All of my flock likes to be hand fed, but only one BO really like to be picked up and held.
Just talk to them and do normal things around them. In warm weather I take a chair into the run, sit and talk with them, they all gather around and chatter, sit at my feet, etc. But I haven't really gotten into "lap chickens" that much.
