I have 12 new chicks, got them on Thursday, a few have dirty butts, is it safe to wash them being so young?

Congratulations on your new chicks!

If they have pasting or dirty vents, yes, you need to clean them up. You can gently wash the vent under warm running water or use a warm wet paper towel to help wipe it away. Don't pull the poop off - chicken skin is very delicate and tears easily.

Dry the vent very well. You can apply a little coconut oil or vaseline to the vent to help soothe any irritation and help keep the poop from sticking.

Pasting can be from a number of things - too hot, sometimes too cold. Shipping stress and dehydration can also be a cause. Check your brooder temps to make sure your babies are not overheating. They only need one warm spot in the brooder, let the rest be cool. Place your food/water on the cool end of your brooder.

BTW - We LOVE photos - any you want to share:)
