I believe there are some mixes in the American hatchery BO lines, so we get these darker feather splashes showing up occasionally.
The mix helps the egg laying rate. They are good layers their first two years, so some dirty looking feathers are not a terrible price to pay. Ours helped us paint the coop, so they were buff, barn red, and brown.
