*Buff Orpington Thread!*

Awww...I'm so sorry for your loss....I understand about the freak accidents..
But, don't let that keep you from them. They're such great birds

Maybe after a little break you might find yourself ready.

I lost my only Golden Cuckoo Marans (8 weeks) to an accident that was my fault a little bit ago.
I'm not ready for more yet, but I did enjoy that breed so, eventually I'll probably get a few more.
Thanks. They really are, they are so gorgeous and sweet. At least for a while I''m not going to get any more of them, but in the future I might.

I'm sorry for your loss.

Hey, maybe all you Orpingtonians can help me out. I'm in the process of designing my coop, and I want to make sure I don't put the roosts or nesting boxes too high because of the heavy-bodied breeds I'll have such as the Buff Orpington and Australorp. I read that Bumblefoot is a common problem & to not have them up high on these things to prevent it. So my question is: how high should my highest perch be?

I have tried everything to get my BOs to roost, but they are just to lazy to want to. They prefer to sit on the ground both in and out of the coop. Im in the process of building a new coop and will have a perch 6 inches off the floor, but I still doubt theynwill use it. They can jump, if they want to, especiallyfor food, and they have a small bar to hop on up to the roost, but still squat on the floor.

as for the bumblefoot, I cant really see the connection to roosting, im sure someone will correct me, but it seems more linked to any open wounds, small scratches on the feet becoming infected through sitting on poop and bacteria on the coop floor. Reducing the time on hard ground while free ranging and good regular cleaning of the coop should help.

I have discussed this with local farmers and breeders and none seem to think my birds lack of roosting is anything for me to be really concerned about.

and here they are

Update on my rooster that didn't know how to act toward the girls. After pulling him off the girls repeatedly and then quarantined him for about two weeks with me going in there every day and holding him, I am happy to announce that his aggressive attitude toward the older girls has changed drastically and if this behavior keeps up I will probably keep him. He still doesn't like me close to him but he doesn't act aggressively me but just walks away. Still very clam and docile when held though.

It's Bella's birthday today! Yous are probably wondering where the CLB comes into all of this as I have always said Bella's mother is the Orpington. Well Bella's egg was under her mother, but her mother got a chick and my broody CLB's eggs were all infertile, so I put a pipping Bella in with her. Once Bella had hatched, I moved them into a shed together and they accepted each others chicks and raised them together. Bella's CLB mother was taken by a Buzzard, so thats why you don't see anything of her now. But anyways, Bella hatched with me and now Bella is mothering her own chick! Will be taking her some mealworms up today! She has also nearly made a full recovery from her dog attack!
