*Buff Orpington Thread!*

400

I was unsure about getting a buff initially as I'd never had one before and I was unsure if my bossy Sussex star would be a bully to a new hen. However after owning a buff for 5 months, I would highly recommend the breed! Of course all hens are different but my buff is amongst the friendliest and most easy to pick up of any hens I've ever owned, she lays almost every day and has probably only been broody for a day since I got her. She also gets along really well with my Sussex star who was actually scared of my buff at first(probably due to her size). Now they run around the garden together chasing any other bird that dares to land near them :p

Ok, I have a newbie question.
I have four buffs, which I ordered through a feed store as pullets and they were chicks.
They are now 14-1/2 weeks old, full of personality, very energetic, one turned out to be a roo and they've all been getting along great.
Today when I got home from work I noticed someone has been pulling out feathers, about two dozen or so.
I can't see anyone that looks like they're missing feathers, no fights, no bullying and the temps for this time of year have been beautiful.
Any ideas?

I don't think anyone is pulling feathers. That's the time they start to drop their juvenile feathers and grow in their adult feathers. Mine are 16 weeks and they are still dropping feathers. My run looks like a full molt is in progress. This is totally normal and just keep loving them. They will be fully grown and gorgeous in no time.

If you watch them close enough, you'll see them preen and feathers come out on their own.

My beautiful rooster-died!!! I think a snake got him :( anyone know where I can get a mature rooster? Anyone want to ship me a rooster? I would pay for shipping.

I do not want to raise a new chicken, I was excited to see broody hens with chicks coming soon after the summer heat :(

Oh no! You must be devastated.

You've invested so much <3 and time in raising your flock.

Hopefully someone with a roo that isn't ready for one will rehome the fellow with you.

They are quite impressive. Now I wish there was a place around here that had such stunners.

Me too. I have a Black Jersey Giant and those black glossy feathers reflecting green and purple in the sun, I just love that. I'm in CA. I can only have hens so I'd need them sexed and vaccinated. If there is anyone selling black orps in the area, I'd love to know who you are.

Ooo I would love to have Black Jersey's one day. Right now I have Black Australorps and they're just starting to get their sheen. I love it, but I absolutely love Orpingtons so it'd be nice to add to their group. One day :)

Ah, that makes sense!
I can hardly wait to see them full grown.

I LOVE my Jersey Girl. I don't think I'd get one again though. I live in the suburbs and just have a few hens. She's a BIG girl and doesn't fit easily into these small doll house sized coops we buy. And she can be loud when she wants. She's my alpha and we call her the Queen. Everyone else is her minion. But she is truly regal. Wicked smart. Knows her name and comes when I call her. If I yell at her to stop doing something (like digging up my rose bushes) she screams back at me. It's hysterical. And her favorite food in the whole wide world is banana.

Hubby was eating a banana the other day and she nearly came busting through the screen door like the Kool Aid Man to get at him and his banana. And let me tell you, if she wanted to get in, she could. She's nearly 9lbs and all muscle.

Oh, she recognizes the sound of my car in the driveway. Hubby will say that she's quiet all afternoon and as soon as I pull in, she starts running her beak for me to come out and offer treats.

She'd fit right in here with my noisy flock. I have a knack for finding the loud mouths! Sometimes I try to sneak out of the house to get to the truck, but I'm always spotted and someone sounds the alarm. Don't get me wrong I love them all to death, but sometimes I just want to go from the house to the truck in peace...mostly because my hands are empty of treats on those days.

I nearly fell over picturing a chicken trying to bust through a screen door. Especially with the koolaid man reference.
