*Buff Orpington Thread!*

She'd fit right in here with my noisy flock. I have a knack for finding the loud mouths! Sometimes I try to sneak out of the house to get to the truck, but I'm always spotted and someone sounds the alarm. Don't get me wrong I love them all to death, but sometimes I just want to go from the house to the truck in peace...mostly because my hands are empty of treats on those days.

I nearly fell over picturing a chicken trying to bust through a screen door. Especially with the koolaid man reference.

I can make you roll. So the first video is of Coco who does not like to be touched or held. But she'll set those feelings aside for a banana. She doesn't think hubby is going to share so she's going to help herself. Watch closely. She finishes the banana and then starts eyeing the one on the table to see how she can get to that one.

And here I call her to show you that she knows her name and will come running when I call her.

I LOVE my Jersey Girl. I don't think I'd get one again though. I live in the suburbs and just have a few hens. She's a BIG girl and doesn't fit easily into these small doll house sized coops we buy. And she can be loud when she wants. She's my alpha and we call her the Queen. Everyone else is her minion. But she is truly regal. Wicked smart. Knows her name and comes when I call her. If I yell at her to stop doing something (like digging up my rose bushes) she screams back at me. It's hysterical. And her favorite food in the whole wide world is banana.

Hubby was eating a banana the other day and she nearly came busting through the screen door like the Kool Aid Man to get at him and his banana. And let me tell you, if she wanted to get in, she could. She's nearly 9lbs and all muscle.

Oh, she recognizes the sound of my car in the driveway. Hubby will say that she's quiet all afternoon and as soon as I pull in, she starts running her beak for me to come out and offer treats.

Love that story... I've had Black Giants before and loved them... I've hatched some of the neighbors eggs and I think there is a Jersey Giant mix in one. Would love to get a couple of show quality girls next year.

Jody's buffs were always huge and beautiful. I still have Nugget that came from her (6 yrs old) and Hope, though Hope is not well.

I'm considering selling the Buff pullet I raised that came from Mt. Healthy hatchery. She's healthy and 21 weeks old, but she's much smaller than the breeder stock that I'm used to by that age. I have 16 week olds who are larger than she is that came from my own stock here, not Buffs, but Rocks. I'll be letting the New Hampshire go with her if I do this since they have been together from the beginning. I rarely let go a point of lay pullet, but it really bugs me to see the size comparison of my own stock with Betsy and Cheyenne. She ought to lay just fine and at least, they both have proper leg color for their breeds.

Here are Betsy and Cheyenne today.

She was a feed store purchase. About 20 weeks. She's been squatting but hasn't laid. One white lobe one red

Hi was wondering if anyone would give me their opinions on the gender of my Buff Orpington x Cochin chicks, they are 5 weeks old, I have put what I think with each photo, thanks

1 - Roo

2 - pullet

3 - Pullet

4 - roo

I really hope I am wrong on the roos as I have seen and heard their dad and know that there is no way I would be able to keep them

We have some questions about Buff's. We have 1 and she is a mommy of 5 baby chicks that we bought as a mix flock but she has become more aggressive with the other chickens and the 3 new babies hatched this week. is this normal behavior or not? we quickly removed the babies from the coop & back in the brooder box they went

I'm may not understand your post well, but, here goes. Are they her chicks? If so, being aggressive with other flock members is very normal. If the babies are not with their own mother, they shouldn't be with the flock at all, but separate anyway. Usually, I separate a mother and chicks from the main flock, period, at least until the chicks are really much bigger, maybe 10 weeks old so they can run from trouble. My large fowl hens will kill another hen's chicks. If the chicks are not with a mother, they should always be separate when newly hatched.
