*Buff Orpington Thread!*

I've got a BO who will be a year old next month. I've noticed the back of her comb turning purple from time to time. I'll go check up on her a little later and then it's bright red again. I've read that it can be a sign of stress or a circulation problem.

I'm in California and the weather is very mild so I don't think she's too hot or cold.
She's not molting.
She lives in a HUGE run with three other hens and they all get along great.
She acts normal, eats, drinks, lays eggs.

So I'm just keeping an eye on her. Anyone else ever noticed something like this? Can you think of anything else it could be that I should be concerned about?

I would dust/spray her down for mites. I would do it to everything. Clean out your entire coop area and treat it. Then I would wait maybe two weeks and do it again to make sure any hatching eggs get smited.

Thanks. I've got a guy coming, hopefully this week, to redo my roosts and install a dropping board. I was going to clean out the coop then so he was working in a clean coop. I'll do that and keep an eye on her.

This is Nugget, our just shy of 4 week old BO! She is part of our first flock of 6 chicks and we have different breeds so comparing them to guess gender is difficult. I am starting to loose hope that we will get to keep our only BO, the breed we were most excited about :( is there any chance Nugget is just an early maturing and big girl or should I start looking for a new home already?

Took this yesterday. He is so pretty I can't stop taking his picture. I know he wishes I would stop with the camera. :)

It's a little hard to tell, but I think there's a chance it's a she. Can you get one straight on of the booty and straight at the side?

I'd say he is a roo. His comb is the same size of our hens combs now and they're 10 months. Are u in town or do u just not a roo??

I am in town :( or I would absolutely keep him/her no matter what!

I'd wait a little longer. Larger comb... well, one of my gals had a large enough comb compared to others that more than one mistook her for a roo - she just happened to be a large girl. :) She lost part of her large comb due to frostbite her first winter :(, but she really is the sweetest of our group.

If it had saddle feathers, that would be another thing... But it's a bit young for that, I think. *shrug*

Wait, and take some more pictures. I recall a lot of experienced BO owners/breeders (almost anyone is more experienced than me) that sometimes it's very difficult to tell what you've got until it crows... And even then, it might still lay an egg.
